Paul B. Deery
“The drawings are made from writing,” he says. “I write about cultural issues, political issues, societal issues, personal issues, memories, hopes, etc. And all are presented through a polarized visual message, but with a blurring, so that what may be a black and white issue becomes gray.”
“This selection of work continues a series I visit from time to time,” Deery says. “Years ago I worked with knots, painting them, drawing them, sculpting with them, etc. Knots as metaphor for the persistent doing and undoing of our human experience.
“I started working with language and writing as a means to create these works. The lines of writing were manipulated into knotted forms. Slowly the knotted lines were reduced to a bundle created by just the writing itself. And I started using the knotted writing as the metaphor and content to further express that persistent doing and undoing, of our human experience.”
