Week 1: Introduction to Soft Pastels

Overview of materials and tools

Understanding the process

The basics of underpainting, layering, and scumbling

Week 2: Color Theory

Using color to define light and texture

Exaggerate color, depart from local color, and explore color concepts to create expressive, bold paintings

Color theory essentials for vibrant compositions

Week 3: Part representational/part abstract

How to limit what you "see" in the world in order to create a more cohesive painting

Week 4: Perspective in Pastel Art

Introduction to perspective in visual art

Applying perspective to pastel compositions

Utilizing focal points to create centers of interest to grab your audiences' attention

Hands-on exercise: Creating a perspective-driven artwork

Week 5: The nuances and beauty of water

How to create reflections 

Use layering techniques to explore the depth of water

Hands-on exercise: Creating a coastal scene

Week 6: Choose Your Own Subject Matter

Culmination of the workshop with an open theme
